I read an interesting article from Artnet News this week on blue being the latest trend in works of art.
This was of interest as the color blue has been used in art, decoration and as a clothing dye for centuries. In the Middle Ages, cobalt blue was used to beautify the stained class windows of cathedrals. The Chinese first introduced the still sought-after blue and white porcelain, also made with cobalt. Then Vincent Van Gogh and other late 19th century painters used ultramarine and cobalt blue to depict nature as well as to create certain moods and emotions while Picasso began an entire new art movement when he painted monochromatic paintings in shades of blue and blue-green.
According to the article, Martin Bellander, a doctoral candidate in psychology at Sweden’s Karolinska Institute, apparently has noticed that certain colors feature more prominently than others in fields related to art and artworks were increasingly rendered in cool blue tones.
